Storytime: where does Asics come from?
Asics was founded in Japan in 1949 under the name “Onitsuka Tiger” and initially specialized primarily in the production of sports shoes. Although the first sports shoe produced by Onitsuka was a basketball shoe in 1949, the brand focuses particularly on running shoes for athletics. The brand quickly established itself as the fifth largest sports shoe manufacturer in the world. After a merger in 1977, Onitsuka Tiger finally became ASICS. Nowadays, Asics produces sports shoes for almost every conceivable sporting activity, in addition to running shoes, shoes for football, handball, fitness, tennis, volleyball, trekking and much more, as well as clothing such as sweaters, hoodies, functional transitional jackets and zip jackets, T-shirts and much more more.
How did this name come about?
In fact, the name even has a Roman meaning and is a symbolic expression in German that all that is desirable to pray for is “a healthy soul in a healthy body”. This slogan embodies everything that the Asics brand stands for - a healthy, sporty lifestyle with drive, ambition and movement from within, to get the best out of yourself and to start with sporting achievements, where high-quality, innovative and functional products from Asics are the perfect companions are. Shortly after the brand slogan came the Asics logo with the characteristic Greek ∂ .
